With an increasing number of people using the internet for various purposes, the competition between the giant chatting apps become more and more fierce than ever. Therefore, it’s not unusual to know that even a notable service like BBM ended up discontinuing. If you have no idea about what is BBM, this post is absolutely for you. The growth of BBM service 

BBM, also known as BlackBerry Messenger, is BlackBerry’s built-in instant messaging service. This is also the initial “mobile-first” messaging app.

First released on August 1, 2005, this software was originally created for communicating with other BlackBerry users. However, in late 2013, this chatting service was launched on Android and iOS ecosystems. In 2015, this chatting platform had over 190 million active users on the planet.

In 2016, this site was the dominant chatting app in Indonesia with 60 million users. According to the data of SimilarWeb, a digital market intelligence service, 87.5% Android devices in this country installed BMM. 

Unfortunately, as the announcement of BlackBerry on  May 31, 2019, this service is no longer available on any device.

Some unique features of BlackBerry Messenger

After 14 years of operation, this service had nearly 200 million users in total. To gain this achievement, BlackBerry Messenger app provided some key features below:

  • PINs to identify users: Instead of using phone numbers or email addresses, each BMM user has a unique PIN (a string of 8 digits). This helps to improve the privacy of this service.
  • Timed messages: You can set how long your receivers can view the content of your messages. This timer feature is somewhat similar to Snapchat.
  • Message retracting: Enables users to easily to retract their messages as well as their sent files.
  • Group discussion: Like other communication apps, you can create a group chat with up to 30 members. Users can also send and receive messages, video/voice calls, images, videos, audio files and location sharing with high speed. This service also supports channels feature for further discussion among users.
  • Uber calling: Since Uber and BBM teamed up together, you can order Uber within the app by some simple steps.  

BBM is now shutting down

BBM is no longer available

Due to the inability to compete with other chatting services, on April 18, 2019, BBM team officially announced that the app will be discontinued since the end of May 2019. As an alternative, BlackBerry company is now running a new app called BBMe (BBM Enterprise). The new service is the paid enterprise version of BBM and offers many significant features including end-to-end encryption and message edition. Only time can tell us whether BBMe will succeed or end up like the former service of .
